The May meeting of the Ohio Trucking Safety Council will discuss Creating the Right Environment for Safer Driving with Dr. John Austin with Reaching Results. 

Cell phone use while driving causes 1.6 million crashes annually, and distracted driving is the leading cause of accidental injury at work and at home in the US, leading to 30,000 fatalities a year. Research tells us that drivers who text or handle their phones while driving are 4x – 8x more likely to experience a crash.  And yet, distracted driving (and specifically, texting) remains a persistent problem at work.

Behavioral science has predicted for many years that setting and carrying out a disciplinary policy for distracted driving does not work. With the recent addition of in-cab cameras to monitor driving behaviors, we now see that distraction is an even bigger and scarier problem than we imagined. To improve, we need to engage the workforce differently than we have in the past.

Dr. John Austin will engage the audience in learning how they can use behavioral science to change and improve driving behaviors. He will explain a 5-step process that has worked to change behavior in 12 industries, 19 countries, and in over 10,000 improvement projects. Through his stories, case studies, and discussion, participants will leave the session with actionable and practical tactics they can use to improve driver safety in their organization.

About the Speaker:
Dr. John Austin is an internationally recognized expert in human performance. He is CEO of Reaching Results, where he teaches leaders to create more effective work environments. Dr. Austin was also a Professor of Psychology at Western Michigan University. He has consulted with organizations for 30 years to improve productivity and safety.

John and his teams have been instrumental in delivering over 10,000 work improvement, quality, and safety projects that have generated millions of dollars in improvements to businesses.  They have coached over 350 senior leaders from many companies and 19 countries to help them improve business performance.

John coaches leaders, teaches courses on behavioral leadership, difficult conversations, and safety leadership, and is an event speaker on these topics.
