Shifting Gears Into Mental Health - Challenging Stigma

Studies have found that truck drivers risk developing mental health illnesses due to tough competition, long work hours and prolonged isolation. Without proper support, drivers are susceptible to developing unhealthy coping mechanisms.

During the August OTSC meeting, Dr. Mark Pleiss, Psy.D. will take a look at the stigma surrounding mental health, common mental health issues drivers face and offer support systems for employers to utilize.

About the Speaker:
Mark Pleiss, Psy.D, completed his APA-accredited internship at Mid-Ohio Psychological Services, Inc (MOPS) in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Pleiss holds a doctorate in clinical psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) in Indiana, Pa, where he completed his dissertation on the topic of social skills development in children with Autism and/or ADHD. He earned his bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pa. He has been licensed in the state of Ohio since 2017. While an intern and postdoc at MOPS, Dr. Pleiss presented on various topics, including working with individuals living in poverty, trauma-focused CBT, PTSD, substance abuse disorders, anxiety disorders, conduct disorders, and mood disorders. Additionally, he was the forensic monitor for Fairfield County and maintained a focused caseload of court-involved individuals, including clients with AOD and/or sexual offending behavior.

Currently, Dr. Pleiss is the Special Management Unit (SMU) coordinator at USP Thomson, where he supervises a team of treatment specialists that provide mental health programming to inmates in restrictive housing. Prior to that, he was the Drug Abuse Program Coordinator and Staff Psychologist at FCC Hazelton.
